The use of medicinal cannabis has increased tremendously over the past few years. Cannabis is the genus of three sub-species with psychoactive properties – Cannabis IndicaCannabis Ruderalis, and Cannabis Sativa (commonly known as marijuana).

Cannabis contains over 100 chemical components called cannabinoids, two of which are the famous tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). The first produces the “high” associated with cannabis, while the latter has a non-euphoric effect.

When talking about cannabis, most would probably refer to its flower buds. But the versatility of the cannabis plant knows no bounds. The stalks, roots, leaves, and seeds of the cannabis plant each have unique properties.

Many experts are conflicted over the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes. Medicinal cannabis is legal only in 37 states, including Guam, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, and 12 other states allow restricted use of the plant as medicine.

The debate on the legal use of cannabis springs from the fear that it could be the gateway to transition to heavier substances. However, not all parts of cannabis are created equal. One of the best ways to use cannabis is through hemp seeds. Hemp seeds are the tiny, brown seeds harvested from Cannabis Sativa.

Yes, these are the same hemp seeds commonly used in Keto Diet. They are often used as a substitute for oatmeal or added to smoothies. Although hemp seeds are nuts from the hemp plant Cannabis Sativa, they do not contain or have very little content of THC and CBD and provide many health and nutritional benefits.

Nutritional Benefits of Cannabis Sativa Hemp Seeds

Hemp seeds are a rich source of fiber, proteins, and fatty acids, including omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, earning its right as a superfood.

Fiber

Hemp seeds have two parts, the outer hull and the inner heart (also known as hemp hearts). The outer hull contains most fiber, especially those with intact hulls or shells. It does not mean unshelled hemp seeds are not fibrous. About 30 grams of hemp seed can provide 1.2 grams of fiber.

The seeds of the Cannabis Sativa have an ideal nutritional target of the fatty acid ration 3:1

  • Fiber is known to give the following benefits:
  • Promotes healthy gut
  • Helps maintain blood sugar levels
  • Gives the feeling of fullness, thus reducing the appetite
  • Aids in weight management

Protein

The protein in hemp seeds provides all 9 essential amino acids that the body alone cannot produce. The body receives around 9.46 grams of protein from consuming only 3 tablespoons of hemp seeds. Only a handful of plants can provide a complete source of amino acids. One of the essential amino acids in hemp seeds is arginine, which is beneficial to the heart.

Fats

Hemp seeds do not contain trans fat and are low on saturated fat. Many tend to consume omega-6 fatty acids, but the consumption of polyunsaturated fats such as omega-3 has become popular. There should be a balanced ratio between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Omega-6 helps increase good cholesterol (HDL); however, too much Omega-6 can increase inflammation. Many of the food consumed by Americans contain more omega-6 than omega-3 fatty acids. An animal study showed that Cannabis Sativa hemp seeds and hemp oil could increase omega-3 to produce a more balanced ratio.

Vitamins and Minerals

Hemp seeds derived from the Cannabis Sativa plant contain 5 essential micronutrients necessary to maintain immune function, including vitamin E, Iron, B6, Magnesium, and Zinc. Hemp seeds are also rich in manganese, potassium, phosphorous, B-vitamins like niacin, riboflavin, thiamine, and folate.

Health Benefits of Cannabis Sativa Hemp Seeds

Some research experts suggest that the nutritional benefits of Cannabis Sativa hemp seeds help aid some positive health benefits.

Boosts Heart Health and Lowers Blood Pressure

The rich magnesium in hemp seeds can help prevent coronary heart disease and regulate your heartbeat. The omega-6 fatty acid provides linoleic acid that can reduce cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

It also contains a healthy ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 that can help reduce the risk of heart disease and arrhythmias. The high level of the amino acid arginine produces a healthy level of nitric oxide essential in artery and vein dilation and keeping the walls of the blood vessels elastic and smooth.

Improves Neurological Conditions

The healthy ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids found in hemp seeds supports cognitive health. Hemp seeds also contain antioxidants that can help prevent oxidative stress on the brain cells. It also contains the compound terpenes, believed to help prevent tumor growth and protect the brain.

The other compounds, including CBD, found in hemp seeds may have neuroprotective properties that suggest being beneficial to neurological conditions like:

  • neuropathic pain
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • multiple sclerosis
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • childhood seizure disorders

Anti-Rheumatic Effects

The compound gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) in omega-6 may provide anti-inflammatory properties similarly found in pain killers like ibuprofen. A study showed GLA reduces up to 75% of pain associated with arthritis.

The autoimmune rheumatoid arthritis inflames the joints when the immune system attacks its cell tissues.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

The rich presence of omega-3 and its balanced ratio to omega-6 helps reduce inflammation. In addition, the healthy presence of polyunsaturated fatty acid GLA provides anti-inflammatory effects.

Animal studies suggest that GLA is a potent anti-inflammatory; however, studies on humans suggest that it is not always effective. Experts conclude more studies are needed to prove the effects.

Anti-inflammatory effects can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases like:

  • type 2 diabetes
  • heart disease
  • metabolic syndrome
  • fatty liver disease not caused by alcohol
  • arthritis

Improves Skin Conditions

Acne and Atopic Dermatitis (AD) can result from dietary causes linked to omega-3 deficiency and chronic inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties of hemp seeds can help reduce chronic inflammation of the skin. A study showed that consuming more omega-3 fatty acids may improve acne symptoms. The rich source of fiber in hemp seeds can also help manage AD symptoms.

Hemp seed oil applied topically on the skin can relieve dry and itchy skin and symptoms of eczema.

Like other plants, ensure your hemp seeds come from high-quality Cannabis Sativa plants. You can purchase them from a reputable farm or start producing them by starting your own Cannabis business.

For more than 3,000 years, people have been using cannabis to treat various health concerns. The FDA, however, has not declared cannabis to be effective or safe to use for any medical condition, although in June 2018, the agency granted approval to cannabidiol (a cannabis component) for the treatment of some forms of epilepsy.

With Increasing Legalization across the US, Is Cannabis Safe?

There is currently a hot debate on the safety and efficacy of cannabis. On one side, there is a popular belief that it can effectively treat a wide variety of health conditions. On the other side is the argument that there is yet no sufficient evidence to show that it is effective, and it didn’t help that many states have been batting for its legalization.

The use of cannabis is on a sharp rise in many states, but this may be due to the fact that the states involved have legalized the use of cannabis. The rise in patronage, however, has spurred major public health issues.

This post will attempt to answer the question, “is cannabis safe?” We will discuss the various cannabis health benefits and the scientific evidence to support the claims.

What Are the Cannabis Health Benefits?

Various studies tend to show that cannabis may be beneficial in treating some medical conditions. These include the following:

Chronic Pain

A review done by the National Academies of Sciences involved over 10,000 studies on cannabis’ health benefits and side effects.

One area where the report focused on was the use of cannabis for chronic pain treatment. Chronic pain affects over 25 million people in the US, and is among the leading causes of disability.

According to the review, cannabis (and cannabinoid-containing products) is effective in chronic pain relief.

Drug Addiction and Alcoholism

In a comprehensive evidence review published in the Clinical Psychology Review journal, it was revealed that the use of cannabis may help opioid and alcohol dependents in fighting their addictions.

However, this may be a touchy finding. According to the review of the Nat’l. Academies of Sciences, Medicine, and Engineering, the use of cannabis actually triggers heightened risk for abuse, and may lead to the use of other substances.

Likewise, increased and more frequent use of cannabis may increase the risk of developing problems with the use of the substance. People who start using cannabis at a younger age are more likely to develop substance dependency.

Cancer

There is evidence suggesting that oral cannabinoids may be effective in relieving vomiting and nausea triggered by chemotherapy, and some smaller studies report that smoked cannabis can also potentially address these symptoms.

Some cancer cell studies indicate that cannabinoids may either kill some cancer types or slow down cell growth. But some earlier studies on this assumption in humans showed that while cannabinoids are safe to use as treatment, they’re not effective in curing or controlling cancer.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Societal Anxiety, and Depression

The Clinical Psychology Review reported an assessment on all published studies on the use of cannabis for the treatment of mental illness symptoms. There is evidence that suggests cannabis can help in treating certain mental health conditions.

The authors found supporting evidence that prove the effectiveness of cannabis in relieving symptoms of PTSD and depression. Having said that, they warn that cannabis may not be the appropriate treatment for other mental health issues such as psychosis and bipolar disorder.

The review tends to indicate that cannabis may alleviate social anxiety symptoms. However, this is again opposed by the Nat’l. Academies of Sciences, Medicine, and Engineering review that instead said that regular cannabis use may actually increase social anxiety risk.

Multiple Sclerosis

The use of oral cannabinoids on the short term may improve spasticity symptoms in people afflicted with multiple sclerosis. However, the encouraging effects, as well as the benefits, were found to only be modest, at best.

Epilepsy

The FDA approved a drug that contains cannabidiol (CBD) for the treatment of two specific, severe, and rare types of epilepsy called Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gestaut syndrome. These are difficult to control using other types of medication. The CBD-based medication is called Epidiolex.

CBD is among the many naturally-occurring substances in cannabis, but it isn’t psychoactive. The drug comes in purified CBD form. Positive findings of clinical trials and research led to the FDA approval.

A 2017 study found that CBD use, compared to placebo, resulted in fewer seizures in children suffering from Dravet syndrome. Seizures triggered by Dravet syndrome are repetitive, prolonged, and can be lethal. 1 in 5 children afflicted with Dravet syndrome, in fact, don’t reach 20 years of age.

In the study, 120 teenagers and children with Dravet syndrome, aged from 2 to 18, were assigned randomly to receive either a placebo solution or an oral CBD solution for 14 weeks, in addition to their usual medication.

The kids that got the CBD solution had fewer monthly seizures – from 12 to 6, and 3 of them didn’t experience any seizure. Children on placebo also had fewer monthly seizures – from 15 to 14 – during the study.

According to researchers, the 39% reduction in seizure frequency offers strong evidence that CBD can help sufferers of Dravet syndrome, and the encouraging results was among the early scientific data in support of the finding.

The study, however, also discovered the high rate of occurrence of side effects associated with CBD use. 9 of 10 participants that received CBD treatment experienced side effects, particularly fatigue, fever, and vomiting.

Final Thoughts

While there have been many studies done on cannabis health benefits, more are necessary to conclude their positive effects on various health conditions. And although the use of medical cannabis is legal in many states, it is still best that you consult your doctor before using the substance. Never attempt to treat any medical condition on your own using cannabis or any other prescription medication, for that matter.

Generally, there is no difference between Cannabis and Marijuana. They come from the same dried leaves and flowers of the cannabis plant, although Marijuana is derived mainly from the flowers. However, due to its racist history, many avoided using the term. Cannabis was also deemed an illegal substance for many decades.

Cannabis has two known components – tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabinoid (CBD). Both are psychoactive components that produce different effects when consumed. Both components are present in Marijuana derived mainly from the flower buds of Cannabis Sativa.

The 2018 Farm Bill legalized the growing of cannabis and CBD products derived from hemp throughout the United States on the premise that it only contains 0.3% THC. Anything with more than 0.3% THC is not federally legal.

Laws vary in each state. Some states limit its use for medicinal purposes; in other states, it is legal to use for medicinal and recreational purposes. The rest that has no law provisions consider it still illegal to use.

The legality of using Cannabis sparked debates in the United States and worldwide. Many say the legality of using Cannabis for medicinal purposes is just an excuse to freely use the substance. However, despite the support it is receiving, many are still skeptical. Lawmakers and researchers want more research to prove the efficacy and benefits of using Cannabis as a treatment. Added to this is a growing concern that the risks could outweigh its benefits.

Are the benefits worth the risks?

What Are the Risks?

The controversy about using Cannabis for medicinal purposes stems from its opioid-like effects on the body’s central nervous system. Some of the potential risks to consider include:

  • Stimulating effects. Cannabis may boost one’s mood but can also cause hyperactivity, increased blood pressure, rapid breathing, and increased heart rate.
  • Hallucinogenic effects. The THC compound in Cannabis may cause a distorted perception of reality, mild hallucinations, and poor motor skills, making certain physical activities such as driving and operating heavy machinery unsafe.
  • Depressant-like effects. The substance can make you feel relaxed and calm, but it may cause depressive symptoms similar to alcohol use.
  • Other side effects. Some studies showed prolonged use of Cannabis might cause memory loss, gum disease, impaired judgment, and an increased risk of testicular cancer.

The effects vary for each individual, and are not noticeable until you use it.

The Benefits of Cannabis

Cannabis is not a “one-size-fits-all” kind of treatment. The compound CBD is said to provide the benefits of Cannabis; however, THC is also present in the substance, the compound that gives its hallucinogenic effects. THC is concentrated mainly in the flowers of the female Cannabis Sativa, the part used in making medicinal Cannabis.

Scientific and anecdotal research suggest that Cannabis may provide the following benefits:

Reduces nauseous effects of chemotherapy

Nabilone and Dronabinol are oral drugs that contain THC used for over 30 years to treat the vile effects of chemotherapy.

A study on chemo patients showed that medicines containing THC combined with standard treatment experienced less vomiting and nausea.

Alleviates Pain

The cannabinoids in Cannabis can help alter the brain pathways on how you perceive pain. It explains why many seek medical Cannabis to treat chronic pain.

A review of a study on cannabinoids determined that THC increases pain management by 40%. Sometimes, it is said to be better than using NSAIDs or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen.

While much clinical research supports the use of Cannabis for treating chronic pain, researchers agree they need more information on forms, combinations of cannabinoids, and doses to determine its therapeutic use.

Reduces spasms of the muscles in paraplegics

Studies suggested products containing THC can moderately reduce muscle spasms experienced by people with paraplegia and those with multiple sclerosis.

A review of a study posted in NIH on the effects of cannabinoids concluded that THC combined with other cannabinoids could improve muscle spasms more than a placebo.

Improves Sleep

Who could sleep when you are in pain? Health problems like chronic pain and multiple sclerosis often cause sleep disturbance. Studies on these illnesses show that THC products can help improve sleep problems. However, it is unclear if THC directly affects the quality of sleep or if sleep improves due to reduced chronic symptoms.

Anti-inflammatory effects

Although THC often gets the credit for the inflammatory properties of Cannabis, it is the combination of cannabinoids that gives its potent anti-inflammatory effects.

Reducing inflammation can contribute to the overall health and benefits some conditions like:

  • Irritable bowel movement
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Crohn’s disease

Cannabis plays a considerable role in the recovery from inflammation, gearing the body towards health and healing.

Body Weight Management

Cannabis is rich in macro and micronutrients the body needs. It contains complete proteins, providing all the amino acids you need. Amino acids are an excellent source of digestible protein.

Cannabis seeds are the most nutritious, but this is not to say that their other parts are less. The leaves, stems, and flowers are an excellent source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Fiber makes you feel full, allowing you to eat less.

Although Cannabis can help increase your appetite, its nutrients and other cannabinoids can balance one’s eating habits.

Mental Health Management

The anti-inflammatory properties of endocannabinoids help reduce brain inflammation that can lead to Alzheimer’s disease. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Cannabis derived medication – Epidiolex to treat Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, two rare types of epilepsy.

Studies also suggest that Cannabis showed promising effects on mental and neurological disorders like Tourette syndrome, Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), AD/HD, autism, and Parkinson’s disease.

Relaxes muscle tension

Muscle tension happens when you are tired and feeling stressed. Some relieve kinks in their muscles by stretching or doing yoga, but others use Cannabis as a quick fix.

THC is a muscle relaxant, making it the primary driver in relieving physical tensions.

Takeaway

Cannabis contains many chemical compounds that may harm the body if not regulated.

Despite the risks and legal issues accompanying its use, many still believe that medical Cannabis can bring more benefits than risks, turning it into a lucrative business

Although at times controversial, cannabis (including medical marijuana) is historic and multidimensional. Its versatility and various uses have paved the way for its entry into a wide range of products and industries, particularly in the field of medicine.

About Cannabis

Understanding what cannabis is all about involves some science. Cannabis comprises over 120 components, known as cannabinoids. CBD (canabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are the two most-researched and well-known cannabinoids.

The “high” associated with cannabis is triggered by THC. On the other hand, CBD is non-intoxicating and non-euphoric. It usually comes in the form of gummies, drinks, oils, and other products for medical applications.

Is Medical Marijuana FDA-Approved?

The Epidiolex canabidiol received approval in 2018 for the treatment of seizures linked to two severe and rare forms of epilepsy – Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. The FDA likewise approved two human made cannabinoid drugs – nabilone (Cesamet) and dronabinol (Marinol, Syndros) to help treat vomiting and nausea caused by chemotherapy.

The Health Benefits of Cannabis

Without a doubt, CBD has risen in popularity, and has spawned a new industry. In fact, there are now schools that offer degrees in Cannabis Entrepreneurship.

Although researchers are still trying to learn more about how CBD can be effectively used for medical applications, a lot of encouraging results have already come out.

This post will discuss seven health benefits that CBD has been proven to provide.

Lowers Blood Pressure

In a 2017 study done by JCI insight, the results showed that CBD helped lower blood pressure of the participants. Resting blood pressure, and the blood pressure after doing stress tests that included isometric exercise, mental arithmetic, and cold pressor test, were lower.

Reduces Inflammation

Medical marijuana has been proven to aid in reducing inflammation, as well as the neuropathic pain that comes with it. This is according to one of the studies conducted by the medical research team of the Rockefeller Institute.

Prevents Relapse in Alcohol and Drug Addiction Cases

People who are trying to recover from alcohol and drug addiction can benefit from CBD, according to a 2018 study. A pre-clinical trial done on lab rats showed that CBD was able to reduce stress-induced anxiety, cravings, and the lack of impulse control, which often trigger a relapse in people suffering from addiction.

Helps Treat Anxiety Disorders

Perhaps the most common condition that people use CBD for is anxiety. According to a study, CBD can be effective in relieving generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Relieves Gastrointestinal (GI) Disorders

CBD, as well as other types of non-psychoactive cannabinoids, can be used effectively in preventing and treating GI disorders like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis, among others. The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD are responsible for preventing and reducing symptoms.

Prevents Seizures

Lots of research have been done on how CBD can help in treating epilepsy and other similar seizure syndromes. According to a recent study, CBD offers positive effects in decreasing the frequency and severity of symptoms.

Fights Cancer

Aside from alleviating the excruciating effects of chemotherapy, studies have found out that CBD can also prevent the growth of cancer cells. It was also shown to trigger destruction of cervical cancer cells. CBD has many anti-cancer properties that can help avoid various types of cancer, treat tumors, and enhance the immune system.

Aside from these known benefits, more are undergoing further research and testing.

Side Effects of Medical Marijuana

Although cannabis offers myriads of benefits, it also comes with some reported side effects that you need to take note of. These include the following:

  • Depression
  • Dizziness
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Hallucinations
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Low blood pressure

CBD is also reported to affect coordination and judgment that can lead to injuries and accidents. When used while the brain is still in its developing stages such as the teenage years, the substance can affect mental function and IQ.

Also, because medical marijuana contains a number of the same chemicals in tobacco, there are concerns that smoking marijuana can be harmful to the lungs. Although the effects of inhaling marijuana on the health of the lungs are not clear, some evidence exist that it can cause bronchitis and other similar lung issues.

Marijuana tends to be addictive. It is commonly seen as a “gateway drug.” The more often you use the substance, and the higher THC levels you consume, the higher the tendency for you to become dependent.

Another concern is the fact that the FDA does not oversee medical marijuana or CBD the same way it does on prescription medicines. While the state may monitor and regulate sales, they usually don’t have sufficient resources for the purpose. Thus, the ingredients and strength in medical marijuana can vary widely, depending on where it is bought.

How Do You Obtain Medical Marijuana?

Is you want to get some medical marijuana, you need to first secure a written recommendation from a physician who is licensed in a state where it is legal. Note that not all doctors would be willing to prescribe the substance for their patients.

To be eligible for a recommendation, you must be suffering from a condition that is qualified to use medical marijuana. Every state has a different list of qualified conditions. Depending on the state, you may also need to get an ID card for medical marijuana. You can present the card when buying medical marijuana from a dispensary authorized to sell the substance.

Final Word

One of the touchiest topics today is cannabis or marijuana – both from health and legal perspectives.

Arguably, the health benefits of cannabis needs deeper and more research for both debating sides to agree on the use of the substance in recreational and medical settings.

For the time being, if you want to learn more about the possible benefits of medical marijuana for you, you can talk to your doctor. He can provide you with proven information on the benefits, as well as the potential risks of the substance. Your doctor will likewise inform you on the legalities involved in getting a medical marijuana card, if necessary in your state of residence.

Never attempt to use any substance or drug to relieve any medical condition without your doctor’s supervision.

Cannabis is perhaps one of the most popular plants in the world, having been involved in numerous controversies as regards its use. It is historic and multidimensional. Its usefulness and versatility has propelled it into a variety of products and industries worldwide.

In fact, cannabis is well-known in the medical field due to its multiple benefits. Two of the most popular cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabinol. The previous is associated with getting high or having a euphoric feeling while the latter is actually a non-euphoric and non-intoxicating component that is used in beverages, oils, and medicinal products.

Health Benefits of Cannabis

Due to the medicinal properties of cannabis, it is not surprising that it is used and even recommended by a lot of medical professionals to their patients. Then again, such usage and recommendation may still depend on whether or not cannabis is legal in the area.

Anyway, in places where cannabis is legal, it is mainly used due to the following health benefits:

It can lower blood pressure.

According to a study conducted in 2017, cannabis has effectively lowered the blood pressure of the participants. In fact, it lowered their resting blood pressure and their blood pressure after performing stress tests such as mental arithmetic, cold pressor test, and isomentric exercises.

It can prevent addiction relapse.

Those who have suffered from alcohol and drug addiction can use cannabis to be free of addiction for good. According to a study done in 2018, cannabis can help individuals who are addicted to alcohol and drugs. In a pre-clinical trial that involved lab rats, it was found that CBD can diminish cravings that are caused by stress, lack of impulse control, and anxiety. It can effectively reduce the factors that cause a person to relapse and go back to their addiction.

It can treat anxiety disorders.

So many people suffer from anxiety disorders. Thankfully, they may use cannabis to lower their anxiety levels. In a pre-clinical study, it was found that cannabis can treat panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder.

It can treat gastrointestinal disorders.

According to a study, cannabis can prevent and treat gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis among others. It has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce the symptoms and prevent them from coming back.

It can prevent seizures.

According to a study, cannabis can help reduce the symptoms and frequency of seizures. Hence, it can be helpful to those who suffer from seizure syndromes such as epilepsy.

It can fight against cancer.

Cannabis can effectively reduce the unpleasant effects of chemotherapy in cancer patients. What’s more, it can prevent the growth of cancer cells as well as induce their death. It can treat tumors, prevent cancer growth, and strengthen the immune system.

So, You Want to Start a Cannabis Business?

cannabis business

Before you start your own cannabis business, it is important to know the industry you intend to enter. There are a few things that you need to consider, like how the market looks like, what your earning potentials are, who your competition is, where you’re getting your supplies, or if there are risks involved.

Looking at the history of the marijuana industry, no one can say they are fully confident in how this industry is going to unravel and how these businesses will turn out. One important factor to consider is where you’re planning to start your cannabis business and how you can stand out among your competitors.

The cannabis industry is proving to be a profitable business, especially now with more states legalizing its use and sale. To date, 18 states have legalized the use of recreational cannabis, including Washington D.C. and Guam. The use of cannabis for medical purposes is now legal in 37 states, including Alaska, California, Florida, and Hawaii.

Business Insider says that the cannabis industry in the United States may achieve $32 billion in sales by the end of 2022. Every year, analysts release their predictions of how much the cannabis industry will be worth, and they are impressed by the numbers each year. For 2021, the sales reached $26.5 billion and they are expecting another great number this year.

“Why is marijuana against the law. It grows naturally upon our planet. Doesn’t the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit … unnatural.”
― Bill Hicks

The cannabis industry is indeed a lucrative career choice. However, starting a business, any business for that matter, would require a lot of hard work, both in preparations and operations. Here are some of the things that you need to consider:

Decide on the kind of cannabis business you want to start

You are expected to come up with your own business idea. If it’s the cannabis business, you’ll need what aspect of the business you wish to start. Are you going to grow the plant? Or are you opening a dispensary? Or would you just like to be a distributor of a particular producer? Probably you’re considering doing it all.

This is the initial step; you should know what kind of business you want to start.

Write a business plan

Every start-up business should have a detailed business plan, especially if there are legal matters to consider. The first thing you need to establish is if your state has legalized its use. Find out all related laws and regulations. Then you need to have a list of suppliers, and all are operating with state laws.

One company that you are assured of is Industrial Green Solution. They offer free consultation. You can get the equipment you need to start your own business from them. They can also supply you with the seeds you need.

Your business plan should include the following:
  • Business costs
  • Location
  • Suppliers
  • How your business will stand out
  • Your competitors

Register your cannabis business and obtain the necessary permits and licenses

Keep in mind every state has its own laws on the sale and use of marijuana. You need to make sure that you know all the different business licenses, permits, and registrations needed. If possible, you might need to get legal help on this to make sure that you cover all the bases. You must fulfill all the legal requirements of starting a cannabis business to avoid issues in the future.

Take note that the sale and use of cannabis are legal on a local level. You’ll do business on a smaller scale, but you may still choose to become a business entity. This means you’ll be paying the necessary taxes and your business will be exposed to possible risks. You may opt to open a limited liability company or an LLC, or you can choose to start a corporation. Either way, you shield yourself from personal liability. A legal professional would be able to help you with this.

If you are going to register your business, you’ll also need to come up with a business name. There might be a small fee if you want to reserve a business name while you try to find out if that particular business name already exists.

Get funding

As a new entrepreneur, you should be ready to deal with business start-up expenses. Do you intend to use your own money, or will you be looking for funding to start your business? This is an important consideration, and this should be included in your business plan.

If you intend to put up a dispensary, there are licenses that you need to get to be able to sell medical cannabis. You’ll also have to take note of which state has legalized medical marijuana. Typically, you’ll pay $5,000 as an application fee to start your cannabis business, and often, it is non-refundable. For New Jersey, the start-up fee is $20,000, while in Louisiana, it’s just $150. The fees may differ from state to state, so you’ll need to know the regulations in your state.

Aside from the application expenses, you’ll need to consider the materials and equipment you will be purchasing. You’ll also have to think about marketing and advertising expenses. Do you have a location in mind? Are you going to rent a place, or do you already have your own property?

It might be more challenging finding small business loans for your cannabis business. For one, it is still a federally illegal business. Hence, only a few business financing companies, or even banks, give out loans to finance such businesses. Most federal banks are bound by federal banking laws. It would be harder to secure a loan from them since most of them aren’t willing to take a risk of being perceived to be financing federally illegal businesses.

You may be able to find alternative lenders, but you’ll have to make sure that you deal with legitimate companies.

There are a lot of things to think about when it comes to start-up expenses. If this is the first time you are putting up a business, make sure that you get all the help you can get, whether for the legal aspects, marketing, or operating the business.

Cannabis Technology transforms the way we live our lives. This much has been made very clear by the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools, clinics, shops, and even restaurants have transitioned to online communication. Leaps and bounds were done by medical companies in the race to produce (and then distribute) vaccines.

The world has coped amazingly, but it would have been completely different if the pandemic had hit ten years earlier. Technology revolutionizes agriculture as well – and it is vital in the rise of the Cannabis business.

Cannabis sativa has been around for 10,000 years. People have cultivated it for its medicinal and industrial purposes. The first recorded mention of cannabis as a medicinal plant was in 1783 by scientists Laurentius Crellius and Huntero.

A paper published in 1843 recorded it being used in patients with cholera, tetanus, and hydrophobia. It’s safe to say that cannabis was a well-known and widely-used herbal treatment in the past. However, in the 1990s, cannabis was categorized as a narcotic, limiting its sale and distribution to the public. It was outlawed in 1936 during the Geneva Trafficking Convention, making it illegal for cultivation, possession, and sale.

Fast forward almost a hundred years later and we now find ourselves in the era of rebirth. As of July 2022, 38 states have legalized the use of marijuana for medical purposes and 19 have legalized recreational cannabis.

Cannabis and Technology

cannabis technology

The current laws have provided more modern methods of cultivation and the use of technology for the advancement of cannabis as a profitable market venture. Below are some current innovations in cannabis farming:

DNA Technology

Cannabis sativa contains chemicals known as cannabinoids, which affect the way your body sends and receives signals from neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers. They affect your response to pain, perception, mood, sleep, and many more. The two main cannabinoids found in cannabis plants are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). Different strains of cannabis can contain more or less of either cannabinoid.

THC is known as the more psychoactive compound. It often helps to relieve pain and stimulate the appetite, but can also cause anxiety and paranoia in some people. CBD is more predominantly used for medical reasons as it helps to decrease pain, anxiety, nausea, and insomnia.

Scientists are currently studying how to alter a plant’s genetic makeup to influence how much CBD or THC it produces. Agriculturists have been using genetic modifying techniques for years in order to produce better quality crops. Now, scientists can use CRISPR technology to yield faster and more controlled results. Unlike GMO crops, CRISPR alters the plant’s DNA without introducing foreign plant DNA. The goal of modifying plant genes is to reduce its susceptibility to disease, make it faster and easier to grow, and control the percentage of actives it produces.

Crop Steering

Cannabis plants regulate their own growth through hormones, which are released when the plants are exposed to external stress. This hormone system works like a feedback cascade and can directly affect how many flowers versus leaves and stems are produced.

When the plant produces more flowers, it is in generative growth, whereas if it produces more stems and leaves, it is in vegetative growth. More summery (hot and dry) weather conditions can stimulate the former while milder weather conditions promote the latter.

Crop steering takes advantage of this response by manipulating the plants’ environment. Though the goal of plant breeders should be to strike a balance between both types of growth, they can influence the plants to go either way, depending on their end goals.

Customized Cannabis Experience

Many people that try marijuana will write it off because of bad experiences. Usually, it’s caused by unpleasant effects on the mood or sensory disturbances. But what they might not know is that there are so many strains of cannabis with varying concentrations of active compounds.

Text Box: Race, genetic makeup, health conditions, and even past experiences can shape the way we experience cannabis individually. Both CBD and THC affect everyone differently due to factors such as race, genetic makeup, health conditions, and past experiences. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Some companies offer services to analyze your DNA and match you with the best cannabis strains available. It works just like any saliva swab test. The companies analyze your genetic markers to understand your sensitivities, predispositions, and preferences. Unlike zodiac signs, this is actual science based on your own DNA.

People who are wary of trying marijuana may want to try this matching technology to avoid any unpleasant reactions that may cause them to dismiss something that could truly help them manage their health conditions. It can also help to break the stigma against marijuana and open people up to trying it for themselves.

Opportunities for Growth

The evolution of cannabis has come a long way. From common medicinal plant to an illegal substance to an edible gummy. Cannabis has given hope and new perspectives to so many people suffering from pain, insomnia, anxiety, and other health conditions. But much more than that, it can now also give people the opportunity to build a name for themselves in the farming industry.

Medical cannabis has revolutionized the way many people manage their pain. A natural painkiller that you can just grow, harvest, and bake into your brownies – that’s the dream right there. Though the regulation of cannabis has gone through its fair share of hurdles, medical marijuana is now legal in 38 states.
This gives patients better access to ready-made cannabis products or quality plants to infuse anywhere they prefer. But all the options still leave many people confused. Are all cannabis plants the same? Can you just cook them however you like? Can you use an ordinary kitchen appliance?
The answer to all of these questions is “no, definitely not.” Many cannabis plants are grown with pesticides or in poor soil conditions, leading to low-quality products. This was something that Shanel Lindsay, the CEO and founder of Ardent, realized early on.

Who Is Shanel Lindsay?
Shanel Lindsay started taking cannabis to manage her pain. When she was 17, she used it for a cyst that she had gotten drained. She developed a post-partum ovarian cyst two years later, after giving birth to her son. Medical marijuana was still a dream at the time, and top-quality recreational marijuana was hard to procure.
Lindsay’s doctor prescribed her with high-dose acetaminophen, but she was very hesitant to keep taking it because of its harmful effects on the liver. Lindsay preferred not to take the drug once she read a medical report stating that it caused one in three liver failures in the country.
Acetaminophen is a common analgesic with a high safety rating. However, it is also known as the United States’ top cause of acute liver failure.
Medical marijuana certainly is not completely without side effects, but many patients vastly prefer the occasional lightheadedness to liver injury. Shanel Lindsay, a young mother with a budding career in law, believed that the advantages of medical cannabis outweighed its potential disadvantages.
This was in the early days before the legalization and acceptance of marijuana. In 2009, Lindsay was arrested in Massachusetts after a police officer found some marijuana in her purse. Fortunately, she was only carrying less than an ounce, so she was not charged.
Still, the whole ordeal of being arrested was traumatizing enough for the young lawyer to push for the legalization of marijuana in her state. The fight for decriminalization went on for several years until, finally, in 2016, Massachusetts declared cannabis legal to grow and possess.
Great news! But what’s the next step from there?

Marijuana: Legal and Accessible
Moving forward, it became important for Lindsay to find good quality, organically-grown marijuana. Her years of research on the subject told her that the quality and concentration of actives can differ in various strains of cannabis. Equally important was her quest for the perfect method to activate her cannabis. Lindsay observed that it could be tricky to cook cannabis properly, even for seasoned users. Because of this, people might end up destroying the active compounds or not extracting enough.
After years of growing her own batches, testing different strains, and trying various cooking methods, Lindsay developed the Ardent Nova in 2016. The Nova is the original all-in-one decarboxylator, infuser, and cooking device specifically made for cannabis. Decarboxylation is the process of heating cannabis and activating its THC and CBD content.
CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are naturally found in the Cannabis family. Both compounds influence the way your brain releases neurotransmitters, which are your natural chemical messengers. Neurotransmitters are essential for numerous bodily processes, such as sleep, stress response, immune function, hunger, and pain.
What Is the Difference between THC and CBD?
THC is the psychoactive compound that causes the “high” popular among recreational marijuana users. CBD produces less of a stimulating effect. It is medically used to manage insomnia, depression, pain, and seizures. Not all Cannabis carries the same amounts of THC and CBD. Certain strains have higher amounts of one or the other. Hemp typically contains more CBD and only around 0.3% of THC, whereas marijuana has more THC.
How Does the Ardent Nova Work?
Lindsay knew that in order to extract the best actives from your cannabis, it has to be heated in a certain way for a specific amount of time. Over or under-cooking your source would result in a low-quality product. This is not an option for people who are literally using cannabis as their medicine.
The Ardent Nova maintains the adequate temperature that you need to unlock your CBD and THC. It undergoes a cycle of heating and cooling over an hour and forty-five minutes or less. The raw materials (flowers, kief, and concentrates) may darken after the process, but that’s pretty much all you will visibly notice.
Once the procedure is done, you just take out your decarboxylated material and sprinkle it into your cookie dough, ice cream, or even infuse it into oils and butter. You can even bake or infuse directly using the Nova after your decarboxylation cycle.
